This massive Tautog caught Friday March 5th, 2004 by Julie Ball of Virginia Beach on the "Spoiled Rotten"
LONG BAY POINTE MARINA, VIRGINIA BEACH - It weighed 22 pounds, 9oz, and is currently the largest Tautog in Virginia for 2004. Virginia's state and current world record Tautog catch is 24 pounds.
The fish was caught on an offshore wreck out of Virginia Beach. Fellow angler and Julie's Mother, Sharon Sheely (from Summerdale, AL) also cleaned up with a noteworthy Tautog of her own weighing in at 13 pounds, 3 oz.
Julie was sitting on the bow indian style, when the Captain, Robin Ball, decided it was time to reposition the boat a little. Just as he "bumped the boat into gear, the big boy grabbed the bait so fiercely, that he was almost gut hooked. It took about five minutes of nervous tug-of-war before the Tog was hauled to the surface. "He didn't really even fit in the net, we had to flip him in." Most are saying it's the biggest Tog they have ever seen. It is on display at Long Bay Pointe Bait and Tackle in Virginia Beach for folks to see...then off to the taxidermist.
Julie is only 6 fish away from her third level Master Angler Status for the State of Virginia. She recently earned the following awards from the Virginia Beach Angler's Club: Release Angler of the Year, Female Angler of the Year, Most Outstanding Catch for the year, 13 Club Expert angler awards, and a Club Master Angler Award. |
