Amberjack are a no-brainer at the South Tower,
where anglers are finding good numbers of big
fish. A few Barracuda are also coming from the
same area.
The
Virginia Beach Fishing Center reports that the billfish
action is heating up this week, with multiple white marlin
release citations coming from the fleet. Captain Mike Standing,
skipper of the Waterman, reports marlin are “balling bait and
cutting the surface” from the northern edge of the Canyon to the
400-line, in anywhere from 40 to 100 fathoms. Mike’s crew won
the Virginia Beach Invitational Marlin Tournament with 10 white
marlin releases recently. Big yellowfin tuna pushing to over
60-pounds are also mixed in with the marlin. Gaffer and bailer
dolphin are plentiful around the Canyon, while a few wahoo are
making things interesting.

A report or two ago I was
‘complaining’, for lack of a better word, about
the slow fishing off Virginia’s coast. Well…I
ain’t complaining no more!!!
The billfish showed up just
in time for the Virginia Beach Invitational
Marlin tournament. Day one of the event saw 21
boats catch and release 49 White Marlin, one
Blue, and a Sailfish. The good numbers continued
over the next couple of days with boats
returning with multiple catches. After another
gusty day or two, the fleet headed right back
out and the fish were still there. ‘Still
Think’n’ hit the mud south of the Norfolk Canyon
and scratched two White marlin, one of which was
Craig Irwin’s first. John Hamilton caught and
released the second…it was caught on a green
machine. Neal Klar on ‘Wired Up’ worked an area
of bait and scored 5 releases on White Marlin
one day followed by a Blue Marlin the very next
day. This Blue was a first for Angela Klar. ‘Honnee
Girl’ released 3 Whites this week. Most of the
boats are seeing many more fish, whether free
swimmers or cutters in their spread. There is a
tremendous amount of bait in the 45-100 fathom
depths from the Norfolk Canyon to the 400 line.
A few reports from Oregon Inlet are indicating
the same for the Triple Zeros.

Along with these Billfish are some big Buffalo
Yellowfin. Fish have been scattered but work
surface to feed on occasion. The tuna are
hitting spreads with authority, making it look
like bombs exploding behind the boat. Multiple
hook-ups are common and with many of us fishing
for billfish, these beasts are a great fight on
TLD’s. Fish have been ranging from 55 to over 70
pounds. Look for the tuna birds and signs of
bait. Once you find those signs, work the
area…the tuna will show themselves when they’re
ready to eat.
The Norfolk Canyon has been holding good numbers
of Mahi on the lobster pot buoys. Fish are
mostly larger bailers, but a few big bulls have
hit the scales. ‘Canyon Express’ put one on the
dock that weighed in at 40.2 pounds. The
following day ‘Gee Daddy’ registered a 41
pounder. To round out the Gamefish, a couple of
Wahoo were also boated this week.
Oregon Inlet and Pirate’s Cove continue to see
good numbers of Mahi in the fish boxes. Bailers
to gaffers are coming home for dinner. Tuna are
scattered, but boats are catching a few here and
there. When they do manage to find the tuna,
they are weighing between 50 to over 70 pounds.
Kent Little on ‘Water Dog’ put his crew on a 78
pounder south of the Triple Zeros. Blue Marlin,
Whites and some Sails are also around for the
taking.
Hatteras Harbor Marina has been busy filling out
Sailfish citations this week. Big Wahoo have
also been taken including a 56 pounder for Colby
Struter of Maryland. Mahi and Blackfin tuna are
finishing up the menu.
Until next week, get out there and…Catch ‘em
Up!! Make everyday a Blue Marlin Day!
