Long Bay Pointe Bait and Tackle weighs in another new

Virginia State Record!

LONG BAY POINTE MARINA, VIRGINIA BEACH - Long Bay Pointe Bait and Tackle weighed in the new Virginia State record Striped Bass earlier this year. This time it's a 19 -pound, 3-ounce Sheepshead caught on July 25th by Jeff Hutton of Virginia Beach. It has been certified as the new Virginia state record by the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament.

Hutton caught his fish while anchored over the rocks at the tunnel end of the Second Island of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The Sheepshead, which measured 28 inches in length and had a girth of 24 inches, was fooled by a piece of "hard" crab.

Hutton and his fishing partner Richard Koch were unable to get any fiddler crabs, their favorite bait for Sheepshead, so they settled for hard crabs and decided to fish for whatever was available at the Second Island. Hutton's Sheepshead was the second fish, and only Sheepshead, they caught.

The prior state record of 19 pounds was caught south of the First Island of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel by James M. Boyd of Virginia Beach. Boyd caught his fish on October 8, 1979.
